Childbirth

When I was pregnant with my first, I became extremely passionate about childbirth as well as pregnancy and motherhood. But childbirth felt the most important. We have been conditioned to believe that childbirth is a horrific medical emergency mainly from poorly thought-out movie scenes. And then we all have that one friend with the scary birth story. Let's get something clear, the movie scenes are not at all accurate and your friend's story doesn't have to be your reality. Weve come to think of childbirth as something entirely out of our control and something our doctors are in complete control of. This is another common misnomer.

In reality God is in complete control.

We have the ability to be co-creators with God in this process but ultimately it is our job to surrender completely to God's plan. The beauty in this is that were created by Him and our bodies are designed perfectly in His image for this very process- the bear children. Not only have we been designed as women perfectly for this great responsibility, but God has gifted us with a fruitful womb. I believe the process of childbirth to be a sacred, prayerful and a very intimate space between God, yourself, your husband, and the new baby being brought into the world. Being created and designed perfectly for this process our bodies innately and instinctually know what to do. Not only do our bodies know what to do but our babies are also working with our bodies to be born by Gods so very perfect design.

Birth is 100% a spiritual journey and trust of faith. Birth is also a 95% mental and 5% physical feat.

Alot of the way we live in the modern world actually works against God's very perfect design. We live more sedentary now than ever before in history, we eat mostly processed foods, and we aren't getting outside nearly as often as we should. These factors and many more contribute to us not being as well prepared for childbirth as say a pregnant hunter gatherer woman would have been. Because childbirth requires so much energy, strength and stamina, it is important that we "train" for the big day.

Not only is it necessary for us to prepare physically, but mental preparation is also, if not more, important. We can prepare our minds to get out of the way so our bodies can do what they know what to do through different comfort measures and coping skills like prayer, breath and movement (just to name a few). It has been said that the mind will often give up before the body does. My work around childbirth focuses heavily on mental preparation as well as physical preparation and of course physical, emotional and spiritual support.

My work with women during childbirth typically looks like:

  • In person or virtual childbirth education classes
  • In person or virtual emotional, physical as well as partner support during labor and birth
  • Educating you and your husband on your birth choices and sculpting a birth plan that feels aligned with you, your beliefs and how you envision your birth to be
  • Providing you with traditional wisdom coupled with evidence-based information to base your birth preferences on.
  • Uncovering and processing birth fears
  • Guiding you and your husband on how to best advocate for your own health and your baby's health during the birthing process through informed consent
  • Guiding you to understand that you are not alone in birth, Christ is with you as well as understand that childbirth is our rite of passage into motherhood.
